Instant Litter: Concert Posters from Seattle Punk Culture
Published in Paperback by Real Comet Pr (October, 1985)
Average review score:

Posters make the punk.An amazing idea, document the rise of a local music scene by the most common form of communication. In Seattle, in the '80s it was the flyers for shows stapled or pasted up around town. Designed to attract attention, they ranged from quick Xeroxs to silk-screened-on-posterboard masterpieces for better-known bands. Postering was the primary means of promotion for bands in Seattle at that time, and this book is filled with hundreds of examples of the form. Browsing through the pages, you see the evolution of a music scene as it became more and more active, inventive and crowded. This book is especially interesting to anyone who ever covered their walls in college with gig posters, or who is a collector. And, if you're from Seattle, and were ever "on the Ave." you'll no doubt remember many of the posters, even if you never saw the bands play.

Night beforeA cute book (literally as it is about 3 1/2 inches by 5 inches), great for a stocking stuffer! The author throws various Seattle bits into the tale--the Needle, Pacific Science Center, Boeing and even the Sonics, Seahawks and Mariners. Know someone moving to Seattle? Here's your gift for them! Are you from Seattle? Give this to your friends and relatives! This would also be a nice souvenier.

Northwests Own Railway Spokane Portland and Seattle Railway: The Main Line
Published in Hardcover by Grande Pr (December, 1992)
Average review score:

The North Bank RoadUntil the Burlington Northern merger in 1971, the Northwest's Own Railway served the route Spokane-Tri Cities-Portland. This story of the Spokane, Portland and Seattle is filled with trivia only a true rail buff could love. It also has some excellent -- and rare -- photos of construction and operations. The unique relationship among the 'Hill Roads' (parents Northern Pacific and Great Northern and offspring SP&S) is explored in detail and with unusual frankness and clarity.
The tracks are gone now between Spokane and Tri-Cities, but the SP&S route on the north bank of the Columbia is still the mainline for BNSF and AMTRAK between Portland-Vancouver and Tri-Cities.
Recently learning that Volume II to this work is available, I can't wait to read it. This volume will cover the subsidiaries and affiliates of SP&S, including Oregon Electric, Oregon Trunk, United Railways of Oregon and others.

Pioneers of Lake View: A Guide to Seattle's Early Settlers and Their Cemetery
Published in Paperback by Thistle Press (01 December, 1996)
Average review score:

Dead Pioneers Come to LifeThe author does a wonderful job of bringing early Seattle history to life. By describing the characters that were important in the founding of Seattle one gains a new respect for what it is that makes Seattle unique. The directions given for locating the graves of famous Seattle pioneers are very helpful, because although most of these pioneers are located in the same cemetery, Lake View is not your typical pioneer cemetery.
